Home Safety Month: Tips to stay safe (and secure) this summer

Abode June 08, 2023

Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it is also the time of  year where we see more residential break-ins. According to FBI data, in 2021 there were an estimated 1.2 million burglaries in the United States during the months of June, July, and August. A home invasion can be devastating emotionally, and for many, it can create financial challenges.

The average loss from a burglary is $2,200 — this includes the cost of replacing stolen items, as well as the cost of repairs to damaged property.

We want to protect our homes and those inside all year round, but since summer has almost begun, let’s look at how we can stay safe and secure:

  • Lock your doors and windows, even when you’re home. Burglars often target homes that appear to be unoccupied.
  • Install a front door security camera like our Abode Cam 2 or a doorbell cam like the Wireless Video Doorbell – it will give you eyes and ears at your door but also in the immediate vicinity around your door. Footage can be recorded and stored if there is a crime or suspicious activity in the area*.
  • Trim trees and bushes around your home. First, this will allow security cameras to have better visibility and, it gives would-be burglars less cover to check out the home or hide when they hear two-way audio start calling them out for their activities.
  • Install motion-sensor lights. Motion-sensor lights can help to deter burglars by keeping areas well lit and make your home look more occupied.

A home security system like the new Abode Security Kit is particularly important when you leave for summer vacation; you can check cameras, keep your system armed and be alerted to any break-in attempts or unwanted activity on your property.

And with our professional monitoring plan, you can have Abode’s monitoring center take care of the entire event while you continue to enjoy your vaca.
